Named for the maple trees that once were found throughout the formerly rural areas that now make up one of Minnesota’s fastest growing cities, Maple Grove will host its 17th annual half-marathon and 5K road race event this spring, along a course that features more than six miles of trails through the area’s scenic parks, bridges and lakes.

Run as a benefit for the local Maple Grove Lions Club, the race — which follows a USATF-certified route — takes runners on a clockwise loop through the city starting at the athletic stadium at Maple Grove Senior High School.

From there, the course winds through residential neighborhoods and city streets, passing by local landmarks including Lakeview Knolls Park and Kerber Park, and takes runners along the shores of Rice Lake and Rice Pond. Both the half marathon and 5K races share the same starting and finish line, back at the Maple Grove High School stadium. In addition to the individual half marathon, organizers also host a two-person half marathon relay, with a 6.2-mile and a 6.9-mile leg for the second relay runner. Several hundred runners cross the finish line in all three races combined each year, including just over 500 finishers in the half marathon alone. Organizers say runners should expect “challenging hills” at several places along the course. Runners in the half marathon will have a course time limit of 3 hours, 30 minutes, and the race will feature pace groups for those who want to make sure they finish within certain times.
