Set for its third annual running with a generous five-hour time limit that welcomes both walkers and runners, the Texas Wine Series Half Marathon at Flat Creek Estate unfolds through the rolling, scenic hills of the Texas Hill Country, the region in the southern part of the state near Austin, which lies along the Colorado River.

Part of a series of five races that are run in the wine-growing regions of the Lone Star state in the spring and fall, this race takes runners through Flat Creek Estate Winery, whose vineyards span more than 80 acres near the small town of Marble Falls and are known for their “Syrah, Sangiovese, Montepulciano,  Tempranillo, Muscat Canelli, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc and several Portuguese Port varietals planted in multiple vineyard blocks,” the winery’s website notes.

Runners will line up for the race start on the grounds of the estate, and from there head around the vineyards before heading out onto the country roads that lead out from the winery.

They’ll run along stretches of Travis Peak Trail in the early going, a long out-and-back that first heads north and then south, all the way down to Singleton Road.

After a right turn on Singleton, the course heads west around the Point at Singleton Bend neighborhood and then nearly down to the banks of the Colorado River, which winds like a snake just south of the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge.

Once they make the turnaround, they’ll head back along Singleton Road and Travis Peak Trail all the way back to Flat Creek Estate, where they’ll make a final run around the vineyards here before crossing the finish line in front of the Bistro and Tasting Room buildings.

Runners (and walkers) will have 5 hours to complete their half marathon, and proceeds from the race will benefit A World for Children, a Texas-based nonprofit that provides support and foster homes for abused and neglected children.
