Whether you’re hoping to find the best hometown race, heading out on a long awaited vacation, or trying to check off every half marathon across the USA, consider this the go-to list for the best half marathon in every state. This definitive list includes a good mix of fast races, challenging courses that test your limits, races drawing in large crowds, serene small town events, best first half marathons for beginners, and bucket list destinations.

We’re not going to lie, it was hard to choose a single race. So, each state also includes a runner up. In some cases–like Alaska, Pennsylvania, or Wyoming, for example–the first place and runner up options were very close choices. A winner had to be chosen nonetheless.

The half marathon was selected by referencing runner reviews to assess quality of race experience and one-of-a-kindness.
